Bio

Meera Sanyal is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party’s National Executive and was the AAP candidate for Mumbai South in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The former chairperson and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Indian unit of Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc (RBS) has also worked on the party’s economic manifesto.

The former banker has committed herself to the economic, social and political empowerment of women. She is a member of Secretary Clinton’s International Council on Women’s Business Leadership and a Board member of Pradan, an organization that works to empower rural and tribal women in India by building entrepreneurial skills and creating sustainable community institutions.

After meeting the party chief, Arvind Kejriwal in May 2013, Meera decided to relinquish her career in banking and enter Public service full time, because she felt that it was essential to take a stand, and participate constructively in the political process rather than just criticize the system.

“I was impressed with Arvind Kejriwal’s idealism, integrity and courage. The leaders of AAP were impressive – but even more so was the passion they inspired in volunteers from across the country and from the Indian diaspora abroad, to step forward and fight to “sweep clean” the Indian political system.”

Presently, Sanyal is a member of the party’s National Policy Committee. She also chairs the Urban Development Committee of the Indian Merchants’ Chamber and is leading a citizen’s movement for Urban regeneration in Mumbai through the the redevelopment of Mumbai’s Port Lands.

Education

Meera has graduated from INSEAD, France and Harvard Business School.
